Bond Girl Style – James Bond Skyfall

Bond Girl Style – Skyfall Film Premier

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, chances are you’ll have heard about the new James Bond movie hitting the big screen.
Skyfall looks like ticking all the usual 007 boxes – drama, action, witty one liners, clever gadgets, dinner suits and of course, devastatingly glamorous women.

Berenice Marlohe at Skyfall PremiereThe premier was of course an equally glamorous event and we were keen to see the array of fabulous frocks flaunted down the red carpet. Unfortunately, we were left a little disappointed. We wanted glitz, glamour and style, and in most cases we got boring, unflattering or starlet Naomie Harris, just odd. Her Marios Schwabb dress was essentially a sequinned bodice under a mass of sheer black netting. It looked unfinished and out of place, certainly not very bond girl. Tamara Ecclestone’s emerald green frock was a great colour, but opting for showing off your cleavage and your legs is never a good idea, it can end up looking a little cheap. Darcy Bussell almost got it right, in an elegant black fishtail frock, but it was topped with a much too big bow which made it look more Halloween than Hollywood for us.

It wasn’t all bad news though, Kelly Brook looked fabulous in a floor length glittering gold frock which flattered her curves beautifully and Berenice Marlohe looked every inch a bond girl in her stunning scarlet gown.

Skyfall Bond Girl Style Winner

Our style winner though, was the always gorgeous Penelope Cruz. Like Kelly, she opted to glitter in gold with a simply beautiful L’Wren Scott gown. She didn’t want to steal the spotlight from husband Javier Bardem (who plays one of the new villains in the new bond movie), and though she kept the look simple with her chic ponytail, subtle makeup and understated Emilio Pucci clutch, it was difficult not to notice how effortlessly elegant she looked on the red carpet. She could be the perfect bond girl. Penelope Cruz at Skyfall Premiere

If you’ve been inspired to add a little shaken not stirred style glamour to your own wardrobe, allow us to be of not so secret service!

Don’t be afraid of colour

Bond Girl Style Roll Neck Top At Vida ModaBond Girls don’t blend in to the background (unless they’re undercover, of course.) So take your lead from Ms Marlohe and dare to stand out with a pop of colour to ensure you don’t go un-noticed. Our purple roll neck is a great place to start, and is full of secret double agent style too. Team it with black skirt or trousers and heels for a classy evening soiree, or with jeans and boots for a daytime rendezvous. Oh, and if you are going undercover then you can team the black version of the roll neck with a black merino wool skirt to devastating effect. Wear either roll neck with a skirt or black jeans.

Know how to Rock a Frock

Anathea Dress By Parakian at Vida ModaGlamorous parties and elegant engagements are all in a day’s work for a budding bond girl, so you’re going to need a good supply of fabulous frocks. Little black dresses are all well and good, but to really stand out, how about this stunning patterned option by French label Parakian? The lacy texture and unusual pattern combine to create a truly stunning dress that will see you through many a dinner party. Good for everyday wear too. Transform this dress using different footerwear, stylish shoes for an evening party or boots as shown for daywear.

Bond Girl Style – Business

Bitte Kai Rand Designer Top and Skirt at Vida Moda

Alternatively, in a business setting you might opt for this striking combination from Danish designer Bitte Kai Rand. A beautiful patterned top and skirt in a wonderful flowing fabric. The skirt is cut in modern style that is glamourous, eyecatching and very chic, perfect bond girl style.

Embrace Your Curves

The most important key to Bond Girl style is to exude confidence and style. Embrace your curves and love your body, whatever shape it is! If you believe you look amazing, it translates to the way you carry yourself, and to the way other people see you. Don’t focus on trying to hide the parts of yourself you don’t like (perhaps we focus too much on this in the UK). Make the most of the parts you do like, and flaunt them to their full potential just like a Bond Girl!

If you’re blessed with voluptuous cleavage, experiment with v-neck and wrap styles to accentuate your ‘assets’. If you have a tiny waist, define it with a belt. If you have great legs, look for shorter length skirts and up the glamour factor with some fishnet tights.

Finishing Touches – Bond Girl Style

James Bond has Q to supply him with gadget or two. Bond Girls make excellent use of accessories and makeup. A flash of red lipstick or well manicured scarlet nails can be the perfect way to finish off your bond girl look, but experiment and see what works for you. Maybe some extra jewellery to add a little sparkle and detail? A killer pair of heels to elongate your legs and add instant glamour? Or perhaps a super chic little clutch bag to stash your lipstick which also doubles as a spy camera. (The 007 stuff might have gone to our heads there!)

Above all else, have fun with it. Bond girl style glamour is frivolous, flirty and fun. Go for all out glamour, or just add a few touches to your everyday look. Either way, you’ll soon be applying for your bond girl style license to thrill.

Plus Size Tunic Dress at Vida Moda

The Perfect Plus Size Tunic Dress For A Summer To Autumn Transition

What Plus Size Tunic Dress to Wear?

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I think the weather likes to play games with me. For example, we will have a few warm days in April or May and I’ll decide to get my summer wardrobe out and put my winter one away. The following day we’ll be back to a month of rain and wind, and vice versa.

Crushed Navy Plus Size Tunic Dress at Vida Moda

Autumn Transition

Come September I am dying to get my cosy clothes out of hibernation and get wrapped up ready for winter, but I know that what I put on at 7am will have me melting in a form of heatstroke come 3pm. It’s like a game of chess with weather and clothing battling against each other.

That’s why I am all about the tunic dress. Perfect for the slightly warmer days that surprise us in September, the days where you can still go out in sandals and sunglasses, but not in strappy vests and shorts. Warm but not hot.

Its also perfect for those days that the wind is a little bit quicker than we’re used to, the rain clouds can’t make up their minds, but the thought of a coat brings us out in a, rushing around, boiling hot sweat.

The Perfect Tunic Dress

This tunic dress is perfect for all of these occasions. I’d go as far as to say, apart from during high summer, it’s a year round staple. Legs out in the warmer months, or teamed with leggings, slim trousers or even thick, wooly tights and boots during the colder months. It can be paired with a light denim jacket, long necklace and flats for a casual look, or add a pair of black well fitting leggings, a large costume jewellery ring and some heels and you’re good to go out for the evening.

The soft V neck and navy blue colour make it flattering for all skin tones and shapes (the dress is available up to size 22), and the stretchy fabric means it will be comfortable no matter what you are doing, in whatever weather the day decides to throw at you!

6 Style Tips – The Secrets of French style

French Style is recognised the world over and remains a huge influence on fashion.

But have you ever wondered what a French woman’s secret is to looking so chic in the simplest of clothes? After a stint of living there, a friend of mine picked up some key french style tips and I’d like to share them with you.

French Style Heteroclite Shearling at Vida Moda

French Style Tip 1: Buy well, buy twice.

French women may not be known for having the most exciting wardrobe in the world, however, because they invest in good fabrics and cuts, garments often look timeless. You’ll often see ladies with two piece suits and beautifully tapered blouses. This is french style, it’s subtle and noticeable because it is quiet and understated, but totally unmissable.

French Style Tip 2: Classic saves money.

We have all, at one time gone for the impulse purchase of a piece that we wore once and it’s been sitting at the bottom of our wardrobe in a bag ever since. There are ways to adjust your look around staple garments without feeling drab. Picking classic styles and colours, such as black, charcoal, ivory and other neutrals could be the smartest move you’ll ever make. This summer will present a fabulous opportunity to add to your options. Colour is very important this for this summer as colour blocking is fashionable at the moment. Careful colour choices will work together and then can worn with the classic colours previously mentioned to create a different look.

Paying close attention to the care instructions of your most worn items makes them look as good as new and last longer. My friend noticed noticed that the most chic French ladies had lint-free and well pressed outfits for almost every occasion. The same goes for shoes and bags, keep leather well nourished, away from wet and polished. Simple but effective presentation is a key part of achieving a look that reflects french style, it is not just about the garments.

French Style Tip 4: Grooming.

It seems a little over the top to do your hair for the supermarket but it’s not unusual to see in French cities. It is quite common to see French ladies with very diverse styles and all ages making the effort on finishing touches, such as manicured nails, flawless skin and neat hair, french style is about paying attention to detail.

French Style Tip 5: Accessories.

French are wonderful at choosing and using accessories to complement their outfits, often in a subtle way. Artful use of jewellery, handbags, belts, scarves and sunglasses can often accentuate a look and make it stand out but without being loud! Again colour can play and important part here along with texture.

French Style Tip 6: Wear appropriate sized clothes.

This is one of the most important tips. You must wear garments that are the correct size for you. Tight garments will look awful even if they are very expensive. If you wear a dress that is the correct size, you will look fabulous, and yes you will look slimmer! If you wear a dress that is a size too small and is tight, its lines won’t look good, it won’t flow properly and you will look larger than you are.

Vida Moda has a some french style collections, they are quite different to each other, one is quite subtle (Heteroclite) and the other is a little more contemporary (Anathea). Heteroclite is perfect for adding some a dash of casual french style to your holiday and everyday wear. Anathea is a little more dressy and if you are going on a cruise it is comfortable and easy to wear french style for being on a ship and it doesn’t need lots of ironing, so it is perfect for traveling!

French Style icon Coco de Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

Coco set a benchmark for french style that is perhaps unsurpassed and will remain an influence on designer for generations to come.

At Vida Moda I believe that women with curves should have the same style choice as thinner women and we are constantly encouraging designer to design in sizes that suit us, and I hope you like the two collections we currently stock to represent french style.

Adele,Vida Moda's favourite Female Artiste!

Adele Sweeps The Grammys With 6 Gongs And The Best Frock!

Fashion statements at The Grammys

While the stars at this year’s BAFTA ceremony largely opted for a more subdued, refined take on glamour and fashion in monochrome and nude styles, across the pond at The Grammys, it was a very different story – bold colours were being splashed about fearlessly, flesh was being flashed, and the fine line between high fashion and just plain bizarre was almost nonexistent! The Grammys seem to attract a more glitzy fashion statement which can be spectacularly successful or which can be a poor choice and end up being a fashion disaster!

Fashion clangers at The Grammys!

In our opinion, there were quite a few clangers – such as Fergie’s bright orange Gaultier gown (We love that she loves her curves – but we’re not sure that a see through lacey/crochet affair with magic pants was the best way to show them off!) and Nicki Minaj in her little red riding hood meets The Pope style Versace ensemble (A little too obviously attention seeking & controversial for the sake of it, for our liking), but there were plenty of hits too.

Bold Fashion at The Grammys!

Katy Perry has divided opinion in the fashion round-ups, but we loved her sparkling Ellie Saab gown in bang on trend pastel blue. The matching hair may have been a step too far, but we think she pulled it off! Kelly Osboure also had dyed hair to blend with her outfit to create a fashion statement. Katy and Kelly both made a bold fashion statement and pretty much carried it off.

Kelly Rowland opted for pastels too and looked great in a beautifully detailed dusky pink column dress by Alberta Ferretti – we give her extra points for embracing her natural hair too – bin the extensions Kelly, it looked gorgeous!

Classic Fashion at The Grammys!

Gwyneth Paltrow & Rhianna dared to bare in classic strappy black gowns by Stella McCartney & Armani – and rather than have a fashion diva strop on seeing their frocks were pretty similar, Gwyneth tweeted a picture of them together - quite classy!

The Fashion winner at The Grammys and The Brit Awards!

Our favourite of the night though, was definitely Adele – not only did she sweep the boards by picking up no less than six awards, but she also looked beautiful in a stunning Giorgio Armani gown.  The classic black shape, a fashion statement in itself, embellished with a mesh overlay and sparkling sequins, looked fabulous.  Timeless elegance with just enough sparkle to mark the occasion. Perfect!

Adele glamorous fashion at The Grammys and the Brit Awards 2012

Adele wore the same dress when she sang at The Brit Awards last night plus a dress by Burberry when collecting one of her two Brit Awards. Despite her surgery she’s had outstanding couple of years and is not only a singing superstar but is also becoming a style ambassador for naturally curvy women. We don’t mean celebrity curvy women, we mean ordinary women, Adele’s body shape reflects that of many women today, not that of the rarified atmosphere of shallow celebrity.

We hope Adele stays true to herself and doesn’t distort her appearance to suit her new stellar status. Adele has a glorious opportunity to be a style ambassador for ordinary women, right now we get the impression she dresses well because she wants to look good for herself and she doesn’t have airs and graces and we hope she never loses that part of her personality.

The media should focus on Adele’s fabulous voice (a gift), her personality and style rather than focus on whether of not she has lost weight. That is her business and should be hers alone, journalists should be talented enough to focus on Adele’s gift. After all we listen to her because she sings beautifully, not because she has gone up or down a dress size.

Designer Fashion Plus Size Clothing Patterned Tunic By Vetono

Ladies! you can help choose our designer fashion collections for Autumn Winter 2012

Designer Fashion For Women With Curves

We’re on a mission to bring a choice of designer fashion to ladies with curves and at this time of year we are busy viewing plus size clothing collections that are going to be available later this year in Autumn and Winter. We are looking for well designed fashion that makes a statement, is beautiful, well made AND available in a range of sizes that go well beyond size 16! That is not as easy you might think. As independent retailers we have to choose what we want to stock in the Autumn and Winter and order it now so it can be manufactured in time. This is quite difficult we as retailers are totally dependent on a designers impression of where a trend is going or we could be at the mercy of their artistic whim and as fashion taste is subjective, one person’s heavenly vision might be horrific for someone else!

Designer Fashion Experiment

Because of this dilemma we carried out an experiment last weekend. We attended a large designer fashion trade fair and we posted pictures on our facebook wall of various pieces that caught our attention and we asked for friends/fans/ followers opinions. Plenty of people ventured their opinions and we asked a few more questions about colour, pattern, style etc and again people responded. It was really helpful for us to have a direct live interaction with potential customers to allow us to get a perception of their needs and desires. See below for sample image of the designer fashion pieces that we posted on our facebook wall.

Designer Fashion Plus Size Clothing Patterned Tunic By QueDesigner Fashion Plus Size Clothing Patterned Tunic By VetonoDesigner Fashion Plus Size Clothing Bold Patterned Tunic by Que

We tested our own taste designer fashion choices by including pictures of pieces that we didn’t particularly like (but we didn’t say this on the posts) to see what your opinions were. On the whole we were pleased to see that our tastes largely reflected your tastes. i.e. generally where people indicated (often in volume) they didn’t like something we agreed with them.

Your Feedback About Plus Size Designer Fashion

There were other things we picked up from your feedback too.

1) We need to stock a better range of plus sizes covering a wider selection of pieces in our designer fashion collections (which we want to do), currently we go to size 24.

2) There was a general comment that there is too much grey and people would like to see more colour, including brighter Autumn shades. Our pictures at the these events will always be taken with a cameraphone in lighting that’s not really suitable for photographing designer fashion items. Therefore colours may not be so accurate, browns, beiges, light greys and blues can all turn out “grey” in these type of photographs. Nonetheless it was wonderful to receive this feedback because “grey” is one of standard colors in a fashion designers palette for Autumn and Winter Collections. Because of your feedback we’ll be looking for pieces spanning a wider colour palette this weekend at the next designer fashion trade fair we’re attending.

3) Your also gave us your views on types of pattern, garment shapes and embellishments that you liked or didn’t like which again will help us shape the designer fashion collections we choose for next season.

Maybe it is a little unusual to inform the selection of collections in this way but we think this is particularly useful for us as an online designer fashion retailer as it enables us to engage directly with potential customers. Designer Fashion trade shows and fairs present us with bewildering choices covering all fashion spectrums and make no mistake it is difficult to choose what is right for our customer base. That’s why feedback through a forum like facebook is so helpful.

We face considerable challenges in operating a designer fashion led business, not least because we are relatively new, in a recession and because we are focused on a core market that could be better served by the fashion industry.

Amongst all the challenges we face we’d most like to provide our potential customers with something that appeals to them. If we don’t do that, there is no point to our business. Finding a way to do that at a particular point in time is quite difficult which is why last weekend was so enjoyable, getting your views live on the day and over following days was so helpful and we hope you enjoyed participating too!

Give Us Your Feedback Live This Sunday

So we are going to do a lot more of this to help bring you designer fashion that you’ll love.

We’re attending another show this weekend (on Sunday) and we’ll post “snapshot” pictures of pieces from various designer fashion collections and seek your views on whether you like them or not. We’ll also post questions relating to style, colour, patterns and textures to help us understand what you like.

Look out for us on facebook through much of Sunday. We’ll be delighted if you can join us now and again and comment on the posts and share your views with our community and hopefully encourage some style debate!
