Cambridge Style Week

Fashion Week Season!

We are in the middle of Fashion Week Season. The 4 big fashion shows, New York, London, Milan and Paris will show collections for the 2013 Autumn Winter season. These big traditional and long established events happen twice per year to present designers collections for the next season. These shows establish design trends that then make their way in a subtle fashion into the clothing that we end up buying in the shops or online.

Fashion Week Awareness and the emergence of other shows

Mass media, social media and the Internet in general is enabling more people to be aware of and to pay attention to Fashion Week activities which were previously only really accessible to selected people in the fashion industry. This more mainstream approach is encouraging people to establish other shows and events.

Cambridge Style Week

Cambridge Style Week is an example of this trend and we are very excited to be taking part. Cambridge Style Week runs from February 20th to February 24th. Cambridge is a fantastic city to live and work in. It has a great economy based in science and technology but it doesn’t stop there. Cambridge also has a rich creative side to it and fashion is a part of that with designers and brands hailing from Cambridge establishing themselves worldwide.
This years Cambridge Style Week is hopefully just the first of what will become a regular event promoting fashion in general and fashion businesses from Cambridgeshire.

Vida Moda is an online only retailer of women’s wear size 14 to 28 and is based in Cambridgeshire.

Golden Rules for shopping the Sales

It’s the season for sales!

It’s that time of year again, when all the high street and online shops try to seduce you into spending any money you have left post-Christmas on their brilliant bargains and cheap as chips chic. We love a bargain as much as the next well dressed fashionista, but we also know that the January sales can sometimes send even the savviest shopper temporarily insane! If you love a rummage on a sale rail, then read on for our golden rules of how to shop the sales:

Tip 1: Is it a sales bargain?

It’s only a bargain if you’ll actually wear it. If your style is casually chic with a muted palette, then that electric blue sequined frock is definitely not a bargain, however cheap it is! Don’t let yourself be seduced by ridiculously low price tags – more often than not, they’re so low for a reason! (And remember, sale items are often non-returnable!)

Tip 2: Plan your sale shopping

Know what you’re looking for.  Before you dive into the sales, have a good look through your wardrobe and identify any gaps.  Are you in need of a great new pair of jeans? Is the majority of your underwear collection looking past its best? Making a list of what you actually need will help keep you focused and make you less likely to be sidetracked by ‘too good to be true’ price drops.

Tip 3: Beware the impulse buy in sales

Try things on or take them back.  We know, it’s busy, it’s a hassle and there’s probably a queue, but wherever possible, do make the effort to try things on before you buy.  If you really can’t face the changing room queue, and you really love what you’ve picked up, then snap it up and try on as soon as you get home.  If it’s not a keeper – take it back! Most women have a shocking number of impulse sale buys hanging in their wardrobe, tags still attached – don’t fall into the trap!

Is Your Wardrobe Ready for Autumn?

Its time to get your wardrobe sorted for Autumn and winter

This is the first of three Posts where we are going to take a look at some fashion options from the autumn wear collections at Vida Moda for this Autumn/Winter.

Say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn!

The days are shorter, the clocks have just gone back, sunshine and blue skies are getting less frequent, and Summer (such as it was!) is becoming a distant memory.
It’s not all bad news though – saying goodbye to Summer means saying hello to Autumn. From a fashion perspective it is one of my favourite times of year. I love early autumn, where the trees are shedding their leaves and creating a crisp golden carpet underfoot. The winds pick up too and temperatures start to drop.

It’s time to wrap up warm

That means it’s time to start wrapping up warm – lovely layers, cosy cardigans, tights, boots, hats, scarves, and of course bundling up on the sofa with hot chocolate and movies!
The question is though, is your wardrobe Autumn ready? If not, don’t panic, we have a few top tips to help you get set for your most stylish Autumn yet.

Find a Coat you love.

Black Cashmere Coat by Bitte Kai Rand at Vida ModaAs much as a collection of great cardigans or a transitional jacket will get you through the first few weeks of chillier weather, by this time next month, you’ll almost definitely need a coat to wrap up in.
If you don’t already have a beloved winter coat that comes out of hibernation every year, now is the time to get one.

Look at it as an investment, a great coat may seem expensive at the time, but choose well and it will keep you warm and chic for years to come.

A single breasted black cashmere coat just screams timeless chic. It will go with everything and never go out of style. They are a great investment and will serve you well over more than one season.

Bonfire Ruffle Scarf at Vida Moda
You can throw it over work wear, wear with jeans and boots for casual chic, or on top of your best party frock to keep you warm en-route, this classic design never looks out of place. If you want to add a pop of colour, treat yourself to a bright scarf (or two!), like our bonfire ruffle scarf from our range of ruffle scarves – It’s an easy way to change up your look and re-invent your coat whenever you feel like it.

Be different and little more adventurous

If you’re looking to wrap up in something a little more adventurous, how about our Faux Shearling Gilet, marvellously chic but really practical. Easy to wear, lightweight but warm.

Heteroclite Wool Coat At Vida Moda

Looking to make a unique statement? Step back in time and channel some classic french style gloriously reminiscent of the 60′s with our beautifully warm wool coat by Heteroclite?

The combination of blue, charcoal & grey in a cape style make for a stunning design that’s quirkier than plain black, but still neutral enough to wear with everything.

Boiled Wool Jacket at Vida Moda

For days when it’s not quite so savage you could wear this sumptuous red boiled wool jacket by Q’neel, which is light but will still keep you very cosy and you’d look fabulous in it!

Plus Size Tunic Dress at Vida Moda

The Perfect Plus Size Tunic Dress For A Summer To Autumn Transition

What Plus Size Tunic Dress to Wear?

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I think the weather likes to play games with me. For example, we will have a few warm days in April or May and I’ll decide to get my summer wardrobe out and put my winter one away. The following day we’ll be back to a month of rain and wind, and vice versa.

Crushed Navy Plus Size Tunic Dress at Vida Moda

Autumn Transition

Come September I am dying to get my cosy clothes out of hibernation and get wrapped up ready for winter, but I know that what I put on at 7am will have me melting in a form of heatstroke come 3pm. It’s like a game of chess with weather and clothing battling against each other.

That’s why I am all about the tunic dress. Perfect for the slightly warmer days that surprise us in September, the days where you can still go out in sandals and sunglasses, but not in strappy vests and shorts. Warm but not hot.

Its also perfect for those days that the wind is a little bit quicker than we’re used to, the rain clouds can’t make up their minds, but the thought of a coat brings us out in a, rushing around, boiling hot sweat.

The Perfect Tunic Dress

This tunic dress is perfect for all of these occasions. I’d go as far as to say, apart from during high summer, it’s a year round staple. Legs out in the warmer months, or teamed with leggings, slim trousers or even thick, wooly tights and boots during the colder months. It can be paired with a light denim jacket, long necklace and flats for a casual look, or add a pair of black well fitting leggings, a large costume jewellery ring and some heels and you’re good to go out for the evening.

The soft V neck and navy blue colour make it flattering for all skin tones and shapes (the dress is available up to size 22), and the stretchy fabric means it will be comfortable no matter what you are doing, in whatever weather the day decides to throw at you!

Plus Size Fashion Tips – Making The Best Of Late Summer

Late Summer Style

Quick! Summer is nearly finished, but we are still going to get some glorious sunny days before late summer disappears into autumn. So it’s time to grab the dresses, skirts and strappy sandals and get out there while we can!

Late Summer Bargains

Sumptous Linen Summer Dress by Flax at Vida ModaThere are still plenty of late summer bargains to be had. This gorgeous summer dress is still on sale at Vida Moda, reduced to £46 from £92 and it’s perfect for a sunny day. Teamed with some flat sandals and bright nail varnish you’re good to go. It also works just as well dressed up with some nude heels and a gorgeous hat, perfect for a summer wedding or garden party perhaps.

A cream linen dress that looks comfortable as well as stylish is just right for a sunny weekend, ideally that would mean round a pool with a cocktail in hand, but this gorgeous but simple linen dress will be perfect in the garden at home or at a friends house (with a cocktail in hand..!) for a late summer barbecue!

Late Summer Mornings

As much as I love winter dressing, nothing is nicer than getting up in the morning like today and seeing a beautiful fresh and clear blue sky with the sun shinning A signal to grab a dress to throw on. One piece of clothing for the entire outfit, simple and quick so I can get out in the sunshine before it disappears!

If the sun is too hot, or, more likely, it doesn’t stick around all day, then this lightweight white stretch denim jacket is perfect. Made of cotton but with a ‘denim’ style it’s not too heavy or thick and will go with all your late summer outfits and last well into autumn too.<a href="Signature stretch denim jacket at Vida Moda

Why not take advantage of the late summer sale at Vida Moda and get your self a fashion bargain, either a statement piece or something that you can use regularly from your wardrobe.

So, go on, get out there in the sunshine, whether it’s here or on a last minute holiday and make the most of late summer before the nights draw in…

And the Lovely Legs Award Goes to……

Cropped Trousers

After leggings made a comeback a few years ago, they’ve transformed our wardrobe. They are particularly great for those who dread summer fashion season. We can wear them with our favourite sun-dress for a more classy, ‘flesh-free’ look and feel great.

These gorgeous capri style black leggings from Vida Moda are available in five sizes from 16 to 24 – yes that’s right! Soft and stretchy with Elastane, they keep their shape therefore a worthwhile investment – you may need more than one pair! Flatter your legs

Flax, which is a new American label for Vida Moda produces gorgeous linen garments which are simple but very well cut. Flax cropped trousers are named “Floods” and are a very popular design in the USA.

They are perfect for the larger lady who wishes to wear shorter trousers but doesn’t wish to show off her legs! They can be worn casually or will also be suitable for wearing out to dinner or a party. Being linen they are quite light, very comfortable and suitable for travelling in.

Royal Ascot – Style Tips For Ladies Day At Ascot

Royal Ascot, A Pinnacle Summer Event On the Fashion And Racing Calendar

The racing season is in full swing, the bubbly is on ice and the racing cards are at the ready! But what does it take to be on top form? Are you ready to make a fashion statement at Royal Ascot this year? Here are our top style tips for racing enclosure perfection:

Royal Ascot Dress Code

Check the style rules of the course – Royal Ascot have issued a new dress code this year which is quite strict, you can find it on their website. The main points deal with dress length (1 inch above the knee) dimension of dress straps (nothing less than 1 inch), no bare midriffs. Trouser suits are acceptable if they are full length and of matching material and colour. For Royal Ascot hats should be worn (this rule is relaxed at other Ascot race meetings). There is a further change to the rules for hats at Royal Ascot this year. Headpieces must have a base of at least 4 inches (10cm) to be considered acceptable. Effectively this means that traditional fascinators are officially out of favour in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year.

Thoughts on Style for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot

Dress appropriately for the weather and the time of year – don’t wear a sundress if it’s cold and wet – and be prepared to wear a different outfit at the last minute if the weather is unseasonably wet, cold or hot. Wearing a sundress in the rain or woollies in hot sun is NEVER going to look stylish. The Grand National is proof of the former. The weather so far this summer has been unpredictable to say the least. Hopefully Royal Ascot will see better weather!

Competition to look well turned out is high on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot so some careful planning is required. However it is important to find your own style and learn what suits your size and shape, don’t be tempted to copy what other women wear or be a slave to fashion. In the fashion stakes at Royal Ascot so many ladies overdo it and I think some of the better outfits are those that are simple and stylish and that don’t try too hard!

Our most important recommendation is to buy the size that fits you properly! If you do this you will look slimmer! If you squeeze yourself into something this is a size too small you will actually look larger than you are. Don’t get hung up on a size number. Designers all interpret sizes differently and we take this into account when sizing the collections that we present at Vida Moda.

Going to the races and Royal Ascot in particular is an opportunity to get dressed up for a glorious day out and it is a great opportunity to experiment with colour and flamboyance – but all whilst being demure. Why not browse the collection of summer dresses for Royal Ascot at Vida Moda for Royal Ascot and other race meetings

Practical Tips for Ladies attending Royal Ascot and other summer race meetings

Fake tan. It’s a choice only you can make. If you must indulge, get a spray tan at least 3 days before the big event. Only go two shades darker, anything more and you risk ‘orangerie’. Read my previous post about Fake Tan.

Don’t worry about the price of an outfit – it doesn’t matter if it’s £50 or £500, matters most is that it fits you perfectly and looks great.

Royal Ascot

Go to the races in style

Always wear tights or stockings if you’re donning a tailored outfit – no matter how tanned your legs are, bare pins simply aren’t demure enough.

Keep it simple – classic styles and staple colours such as cream never date.

Accessorise – wear sunglasses on a sunny day or a pair of beautiful gloves and a matching umbrella which co-ordinate with your Royal Ascot outfit in cool conditions.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match – I’ll often wear the jacket of one outfit with the dress from another if they look great together. I don’t believe in wearing something once then getting rid of it.

If you want to score in the style stakes, a hat or headpiece really is a must when it comes to racing etiquette, particularly on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. But please do be sensible, find something that goes with your outfit and don’t forget a gorgeous but simple summer hat could really set off your outfit and make a statement far more than an elaborate headpiece.

Are your nails neat and tidy? Is your hair sleek and styled? If you’re not well groomed it won’t matter how fabulous your outfit is.

Don’t wear heels you can’t walk comfortably in – you won’t look stylish if you’re hobbling around all day or end up barefoot.

Plus Size Fashion for Spring

Plus Size Pastel Trends

Powdery pastels are big news this spring, and our gorgeous plus size cream linen dress by French designer Heteroclite (on special offer!) is a perfect base for this fresh, clean look.Plus-Size-Cream-Linen-Dress-by-Heteroclite-at-Vida-Moda
The scooped neck and inverted pleat styling are super flattering.  The large patch pockets and fine line detail pattern add interest while still maintaining a chic, uncluttered, classic shape.
To work the pastel trend, add a soft plus size cardigan, some cute patent pumps, or as the weather warms up, some great wedges to add height and a touch of glamour.  A pretty patterned headscarf tied loosely as a hair band will really set off the look.

For a bolder colour statement, think block colours which are on trend this year – if pastel colours are your thing, how about trying our select new range of plus size pastel teeshirts that have just just arrived in Lime Green, Tourquoise or Fuchsia, or if you’re feeling brave, throw in a pop of neon to really make the look your own.

However, if the thought of sugary pinks and baby blues have you running in fear to the safety of the nearest little black dress, don’t panic! We’re here to help. and now live on Vida Moda one plus size clothing store for curvy women.

Plus Size Combinations

For plus size ladies, as with any trend, it’s all about making it work for you, by working elements of it into your own style. There is no reason why plus size women can’t look good, a little though around combinations, patterns and shapes of plus size clothes is all that is required. Why not try the blue version of our plus size linen dress. As a ‘safer’ option you can start adding some of the cotton candy palette to traditional colours with a little clever accessorising – some baby blue patent pumps, or a stack of muted rainbow coloured bangles will add interest and keep your look totally up to date. Alternatively you might prefer a short white cotton plus size jacket to go with this dress
Either way, it’s spring, summer is coming, its time to have fun, experiment, and embrace your inner girlie girl this spring! Shop at Vida Moda for your Plus Size Designer Fashions this spring.
