Royal Ascot – Style Tips For Ladies Day At Ascot

Royal Ascot, A Pinnacle Summer Event On the Fashion And Racing Calendar

The racing season is in full swing, the bubbly is on ice and the racing cards are at the ready! But what does it take to be on top form? Are you ready to make a fashion statement at Royal Ascot this year? Here are our top style tips for racing enclosure perfection:

Royal Ascot Dress Code

Check the style rules of the course – Royal Ascot have issued a new dress code this year which is quite strict, you can find it on their website. The main points deal with dress length (1 inch above the knee) dimension of dress straps (nothing less than 1 inch), no bare midriffs. Trouser suits are acceptable if they are full length and of matching material and colour. For Royal Ascot hats should be worn (this rule is relaxed at other Ascot race meetings). There is a further change to the rules for hats at Royal Ascot this year. Headpieces must have a base of at least 4 inches (10cm) to be considered acceptable. Effectively this means that traditional fascinators are officially out of favour in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year.

Thoughts on Style for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot

Dress appropriately for the weather and the time of year – don’t wear a sundress if it’s cold and wet – and be prepared to wear a different outfit at the last minute if the weather is unseasonably wet, cold or hot. Wearing a sundress in the rain or woollies in hot sun is NEVER going to look stylish. The Grand National is proof of the former. The weather so far this summer has been unpredictable to say the least. Hopefully Royal Ascot will see better weather!

Competition to look well turned out is high on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot so some careful planning is required. However it is important to find your own style and learn what suits your size and shape, don’t be tempted to copy what other women wear or be a slave to fashion. In the fashion stakes at Royal Ascot so many ladies overdo it and I think some of the better outfits are those that are simple and stylish and that don’t try too hard!

Our most important recommendation is to buy the size that fits you properly! If you do this you will look slimmer! If you squeeze yourself into something this is a size too small you will actually look larger than you are. Don’t get hung up on a size number. Designers all interpret sizes differently and we take this into account when sizing the collections that we present at Vida Moda.

Going to the races and Royal Ascot in particular is an opportunity to get dressed up for a glorious day out and it is a great opportunity to experiment with colour and flamboyance – but all whilst being demure. Practical Tips for Ladies attending Royal Ascot and other summer race meetings

Fake tan. It’s a choice only you can make. If you must indulge, get a spray tan at least 3 days before the big event. Only go two shades darker, anything more and you risk ‘orangerie’. Read my previous post about Fake Tan.

Don’t worry about the price of an outfit – it doesn’t matter if it’s £50 or £500, matters most is that it fits you perfectly and looks great.

Go to the races in style

Always wear tights or stockings if you’re donning a tailored outfit – no matter how tanned your legs are, bare pins simply aren’t demure enough.

Keep it simple – classic styles and staple colours such as cream never date.

Accessorise – wear sunglasses on a sunny day or a pair of beautiful gloves and a matching umbrella which co-ordinate with your Royal Ascot outfit in cool conditions.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match – I’ll often wear the jacket of one outfit with the dress from another if they look great together. I don’t believe in wearing something once then getting rid of it.

If you want to score in the style stakes, a hat or headpiece really is a must when it comes to racing etiquette, particularly on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. But please do be sensible, find something that goes with your outfit and don’t forget a gorgeous but simple summer hat could really set off your outfit and make a statement far more than an elaborate headpiece.

Are your nails neat and tidy? Is your hair sleek and styled? If you’re not well groomed it won’t matter how fabulous your outfit is.

Don’t wear heels you can’t walk comfortably in – you won’t look stylish if you’re hobbling around all day or end up barefoot.

Summer Dresses – a further option – Strawberries and Cream!

Its the second week of Wimbledon and things are hotting up, literally! We are in the midst of a mini heatwave and as I write this we are due a storm that might take the humidity away! On court it has been a hot day too, spare a thought for the poor players charging around in this heat. Ladies be well aware that Rafa may well require numerous shirt changes especially if he has another tough match in the heat like the one today. Andy Murray won too. In fact the top of the men’s draw is still intact but the ladies draw threw up two very surprising exits today. The Williams sisters both lost and while neither were seeded in the top 4 you’d always expect them to feature given their impressive past performances in the tournament. The Ladies singles is anyone’s title this year, could this be the year that Maria Sharapova comes back and wins a second title? One or other of the Williams sisters has won The Ladies Singles Title at Wimbledon 9 times in the last 11 years, Maria Sharapova and Amélie Mauresmo were the winners in the remaining two years. Only one of the last 11 finals did not feature a Williams sister so 2011 is definite break with recent tradition for the ladies.

So what of one of Wimbledon’s other traditions? Well of course you need some contrasting colour to really bring out the greenness of Wimbledon and what better colour than Red. Strawberries and Cream, the sweet side of Wimbledon, perfect for a sunny day and as English a tradition as the tournament itself. To celebrate the tradition of Strawberries and Cream at Wimbledon we are have a beautiful Red and White Plus Size Summer Dress for you. We also have some Plus Size White Linen Trousers that will complement it and leave you feeling cool and comfortable on court!

What are you wearing to Wimbledon?

Wimbledon starts next week so what are you going to wear if you are going?

One of things we love about Wimbledon is the fact that the players have to wear White, it’s a competition rule and advertising on the court is also kept to a minimum. White looks so good against the green background of the grass and the court surroundings.

We hope you are lucky enough to be going! If so what are you going to wear? Will you stand out on Centre Court? Will the TV cameras catch sight of you and be forced to linger because you look stunning? We hope so! At Vida Moda We’ve got a few options that will help look really good at Wimbledon this year. One of our recommendations would be for you to attend in a stunning white outfit perhaps accessorised with some lovely jewelery, something silver with a splash of colour that works well for you. Everyone can wear white and look good and the colour choice of your jewelery will depend on your skin and hair colouring. So its most important you choose your jewellery carefully!

One of the milestones of British summer is approaching fast. Yes it’s time for The Wimbledon Championship, held at the All England Club, where we see the game of tennis presented in a quintessentially British fashion. This is the time of year when millions of British people tune in to see a player from the British Isles lift either of the singles trophies at Wimbledon. We think The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are the jewel in the crown of World tennis. Of the four Grand Slam Titles it is perhaps the one that all players wish to win the most. The Lawn Tennis Association make a valiant effort every year to make sure the championship is beautifully presented and well run, not withstanding the weather!. Henman Hill will be awash with hopeful fans all watching the big screen with a fervent desire to catch a glimpse of a potential British Champion. Will we be lucky this year?

So ladies the most important question is are you lucky enough to be going? Do you have a ticket or are you having to join the queue for tickets on the day? Over the course of this week we’ll be celebrating Wimbledon with some blog posts and special offers highlighting our choice of what to wear from Vida Moda if you are going to Wimbledon this year. We’ve got some very nice summer clothes to help you look fabulous at Wimbledon!
