Fake tan: is it really worth it?

fake tanFake tan is hugely popular as tanning in the sun is dangerous and out of style, this much we know. However, we can’t deny a warm, bronze glow on the skin can be flattering and healthy looking. With summer just around the corner and we shed layers, we also show more skin. So, do we fake it or not?

If you saw the Apprentice last week you’ll have seen the popularity of fake tan, even when sold off a table in the middle of a shopping centre with no real credibility behind it! So what is it about fake tan that attracts us? Quite simply it is the desire to be perceived as being beautiful and how better to the that than with a bottle of fake tan if you are not in a position to take a sun kissed holiday for 2 months in the sun. There are pitfalls though so do read on!

Fake Tan facts

According to St. Tropez, one of the UK’s leading fake tan brands, 41% of the nation’s women use fake tan. It’s become almost uniform for celebrities to be bronzed to some degree. Sporting a healthy glow is thought to show affluence but for many of us, going a shade or two darker hides a multitude of skin impurities. But you can’t flick through a gossip magazine during summer without seeing pictures of some fake tan embarrassment. Streaks, dayglo orange, blotches and visible tan lines, despite the best efforts of application and how much you may have paid, you risk to look tacky and artificial. With the Katie Prices of this world, we almost come to expect it but even A-listers such as Kiera Knightly are not immune to fake tan disasters. Poor Christina Aguilera was torn to shreds by the media when a mysterious trail of dark liquid trickled down her leg whilst performing at Etta James’ funeral earlier this year.

Fake Tan Spray Booths

Despite the debate over whether bronzing out of a bottle looks classy or not, the popularity of fake tanning is not waning. Many of our beauty therapists are offering it as standard plus spray tan booths are germinating the local high street and the neighbourhood parade of shops. Modern devices offer a smooth, airbrush like quality, so you wonder how it can ever go wrong. Even with all this technology, the temptation of oneupmanship is too strong, even Hollywood stars measuring too strong on the orange-o-metre.

It is completely possible to simply introduce a better skin routine, drinking more water, eating a balanced diet and strategically using a quality bronzing powder to create the same sort of glow. Also consider that some colour garments will make you look more pale, so blend your outfit to match your complexion.

DIY Fake Tan

If you are going the DIY bottle tan route, be warned. It takes a lot of practice to get it right plus you absolutely must follow some steps for a smooth finish, exfoliating, moisturising and having the lemon juice to hand. Happily with the internet, there’s a good stack of posts with excellent tips for application!

Put a Spring In Your Step and Wardrobe

Spring Fashion

Spring is a time for renewal, refocus and replenish. It’s also perfect for tidying up your wardrobe, organising your clothes for warmer weather and making a list of items you need to buy.

Spring Fashion White Linen Jacket at Vida ModaAs we head towards brighter and warmer weather (fingers crossed) in the UK, we lean towards livening up our clothing choices with colours and lighter fabrics from spring fashion collections. Nothing makes us feel better than we first shed some layers and wear jackets instead of coats. Possibly because they are lighter in weight and less cumbersome. But also because the colours symbolise brighter days, lighter nights and we get to have fun experimenting with them.

Spring Fashion Trends

So what’s on trend in Spring Fashion 2012? Lots of colour! Whether it’s blocks of deep hues or digital floral prints, it seems like the theme for many designers is having fun with every shape and shade. Which is good news when it comes to carving out your own spring fashion style. In terms of accessories, shoe boots are still big this year, the bigger the heels the better. Which is perfect as they suit all heights and shapes teamed up with trousers or long skirts (also still on trend). In terms of bags, it’s back to the 70′s a little with woven bags with macrame style straps.

Spring Fashion Shopping List

Before making a clothes shopping list, survey your existing Spring/ Summer garments. Keep those which are in good condition, you know fit well and will feel comfortable wearing for another season. Hanging onto skirts, trousers and dresses which fall into these categories is optimal. You can then treat yourself with new jackets or tops and accessories to go with them. It’s important to be honest with yourself about any colours or patterns you’re not comfortable with before buying. Often we fall for an item that is simply lush looking but don’t think about how it will look on.

Spring Fashion 2012 Sales

Once you have it clear in your mind how many of each garment you need, make your list and shop away. There plenty of sale items available. In a few easy steps or clicks you could get yourself a whole new wardrobe with a few additional pieces from spring fashion collections. Vida Moda currently has a spring fashion sale, a few select items at good prices that will help liven up your wardrobe as described above. Check out some of our other fashion tips on this blog!

Caring for your Skin – 7 Speedy Facial Tips for Women

In an ideal world, we’d all be able to stick to our skin regime religiously for healthy looking skin but modern life isn’t that simple. If you can grab 30 minutes in the bath, you can give yourself a mini-facial which can repair a multitude of skin errors from your busy week.

7 Speedy Facial Tips

Facial Tips 1.

While the bath is running…….remove make-up with a cleanser & cotton wool pads. Using wipes may not remove all make-up and dirt, so try and cleanser which you need to remove after applying. Grab some clean flannels and line up plenty of cotton wool pads by the side of the bath. 5 minutes

Facial Tips 2.

Get in, relax and breath…….bath foam or salts with citrus, tea tree or eucalyptus base are particularly de-stressing and perfect for a 5 minute yoga style breathing exercise with eyes closed to clear your head. 5 minutes

Facial Tips 3.

Cleanse your face with a foaming wash that balances out the skin but doesn’t strip it entirely of your natural oils. Skincare is personal to our own physiology, so make sure you ‘try before you buy’. Once you have rinsed thoroughly, pat face & hairline dry to get rid of excess water. 2 minutes

Facial Tips 4.

The #1 rule of good skin care….exfoliate. Find yourself a decent facial scrub that suits your budget and skin type. Rub slowly delicately over the skin using two hands, focussing on areas where dirt builds up more heavily (e.g. side of nose, chin). 5 minutes

Facial Tips 5.

Drink it up….use a face mask that rehydrates the skin. If you didn’t have chance to slice up the cold cucumber, dip two cotton wool pads under the cold tap and place over the eyes. 10 minutes

Facial Tips 6.

Setting the tone…..using a toner can remove excess oils and residue from a facial scrub plus they can help absorb moisturisers. 2 minutes

Facial Tips 7.

Hop out and smooth on……once out of the bath, dried and relaxed, sit for a few minutes and smooth some moisturiser on the face. Try and find an oil-free type which will plump up the skin but not leave residual grease. Try before you buy, places like Origins, Body Shop and most reputable cosmetics counters in department stores will have samples you can take away. Don’t be scared to ask. A good moisturiser can be a clever and valuable investment and smart companies know that if you‘re hooked, they have a repeat purchaser for a long time.

Women of all ages can have great skin, and despite the daily buffeting our skin gets from the outdoor elements and heating systems in buildings it is easy to maintain your skin with these simple facial tips which you can work into your daily routine. It just takes a little care and attention, and why not use these speedy facial tips as part of a relaxation routine for yourself, you’ll feel good and look great!

Fashion Models use facial tips like these to keep their skin fresh

Models tend to have great and the ladies who model our collections at Vida Moda certainly do. They both work extremely long hours and do varied jobs and spend a lot of time standing under bright flashing laights during their working day. They have to look after their skin in order to look good and they will use daily routines like these facial tips that they use to maintain their skin.

6 Style Tips – The Secrets of French style

French Style is recognised the world over and remains a huge influence on fashion.

But have you ever wondered what a French woman’s secret is to looking so chic in the simplest of clothes? After a stint of living there, a friend of mine picked up some key french style tips and I’d like to share them with you.

French Style Heteroclite Shearling at Vida Moda

French Style Tip 1: Buy well, buy twice.

French women may not be known for having the most exciting wardrobe in the world, however, because they invest in good fabrics and cuts, garments often look timeless. You’ll often see ladies with two piece suits and beautifully tapered blouses. This is french style, it’s subtle and noticeable because it is quiet and understated, but totally unmissable.

French Style Tip 2: Classic saves money.

We have all, at one time gone for the impulse purchase of a piece that we wore once and it’s been sitting at the bottom of our wardrobe in a bag ever since. There are ways to adjust your look around staple garments without feeling drab. Picking classic styles and colours, such as black, charcoal, ivory and other neutrals could be the smartest move you’ll ever make. This summer will present a fabulous opportunity to add to your options. Colour is very important this for this summer as colour blocking is fashionable at the moment. Careful colour choices will work together and then can worn with the classic colours previously mentioned to create a different look.

Paying close attention to the care instructions of your most worn items makes them look as good as new and last longer. My friend noticed noticed that the most chic French ladies had lint-free and well pressed outfits for almost every occasion. The same goes for shoes and bags, keep leather well nourished, away from wet and polished. Simple but effective presentation is a key part of achieving a look that reflects french style, it is not just about the garments.

French Style Tip 4: Grooming.

It seems a little over the top to do your hair for the supermarket but it’s not unusual to see in French cities. It is quite common to see French ladies with very diverse styles and all ages making the effort on finishing touches, such as manicured nails, flawless skin and neat hair, french style is about paying attention to detail.

French Style Tip 5: Accessories.

French are wonderful at choosing and using accessories to complement their outfits, often in a subtle way. Artful use of jewellery, handbags, belts, scarves and sunglasses can often accentuate a look and make it stand out but without being loud! Again colour can play and important part here along with texture.

French Style Tip 6: Wear appropriate sized clothes.

This is one of the most important tips. You must wear garments that are the correct size for you. Tight garments will look awful even if they are very expensive. If you wear a dress that is the correct size, you will look fabulous, and yes you will look slimmer! If you wear a dress that is a size too small and is tight, its lines won’t look good, it won’t flow properly and you will look larger than you are.

Vida Moda has a some french style collections, they are quite different to each other, one is quite subtle (Heteroclite) and the other is a little more contemporary (Anathea). Heteroclite is perfect for adding some a dash of casual french style to your holiday and everyday wear. Anathea is a little more dressy and if you are going on a cruise it is comfortable and easy to wear french style for being on a ship and it doesn’t need lots of ironing, so it is perfect for traveling!

French Style icon Coco de Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

Coco set a benchmark for french style that is perhaps unsurpassed and will remain an influence on designer for generations to come.

At Vida Moda I believe that women with curves should have the same style choice as thinner women and we are constantly encouraging designer to design in sizes that suit us, and I hope you like the two collections we currently stock to represent french style.

Who will be your 2012 television style icon?

Image: nuchylee / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Behind everyone’s personal style there’s a number of influences. They could be designers, artists, shops, boutiques, celebrities or people we know. However, increasingly it’s television that is the root of our style choices these days.

Traditionally, we’d pick up a copy of Vogue or other glossy mags to see what is at the cutting edge of style but nowadays other mediums are making a bigger impact on what we wear & how. We are more likely to absorb our fashion intake through music videos, movies and television programmes. It’s a phenomenon that has occurred over the last few decades. Who didn’t sport a pair a legwarmers after watching their weekly dose of The Kids from Fame? No one had ever heard of shoulder pads before Dynasty. A week didn’t go by for a hairdresser to be asked for a ‘Rachel’ cut after Friends peaked in popularity. But now there are shows where fashion is an integral part of the plot.

When Carrie Bradshaw made large fabric flowers a feature of her wardrobe in the series Sex and the City, women across the world sported them whilst sipping their new found tipple Cosmopolitans. Not to mention the numerous other designers and looks that particular programme boosted, Manolo Blahnick, Jimmy Choo and Roberto Cavalli to name a few. Ugly Betty is unashamedly a cat-walk wrapped around a drama. Even though Absolutely Fabulous poked fun at the industry, there was still a fair amount of showcasing and name dropping going on.

Nostalgia is playing a big part in our style influence of late also. Mad Men, set in a 1960s New York advertising agency was a welcome glamorisation of women’s natural curves. In the UK, The Hour made 1950s prim popular as well as inspiring some of us to dig up the red lipstick again. We really loved The hour and ladies if you have hips you can recreate some of the look yourself by choosing our merino wool skirts by Bitte Kai Rand! Romola Garai who played the Bel Rowley character wore some fantasic dresses and skirts in the series.

In a more modern vein on Channel 4, This is England ’86 and ’88 have been playing out a trip down fashion memory lane, from punk to dodgy highlights and dayglo accessories.

What will 2012 have in store? We’ve already had a ultra chic start to the year with the BBC’s We’ll Take Manhattan, a portrayal of Jean Shrimpton and David Bailey’s beginnings at Vogue. You cannot fail to be aroused by the 1960s looks against backdrop of New York City. If anything, that will bring back the pout…..it can only get better from here.
