Fashion to suit your skin tone

Fashion to Suit Your Skin Tone

Choosing fashion for your skin tone

No doubt you already know how important it is to dress for your shape, but do you give any consideration to dressing according to your skin tone?
It’s more important than you might think – wearing the wrong colours for your skin tone can make even the healthiest complexion look sallow or ‘off’, whereas choosing colours that compliment and flatter your skin can really improve your overall look and give you lots more confidence! Fashion is about colour, texture and shape.

Where to start with your skin tone

So where should you start? First, you need to work out whether your skin tone is warm or cool – not sure? Try these tests…

Look at the colour of your veins!

In bright, natural light, look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. If they are mostly blue, then you probably have a cool skin tone, mostly green suggests a warm skin tone. (If you see a mixture, you probably have neutral skin tone – so you’re one of those lucky people who can carry off any colour they like!)

Look at your hair colour.

Your natural hair colour is often a good reflection of your skin tone. Red Heads, Yellow Blondes and lighter brunettes are usually a sign of warm skin tone, while black, silver and ash tones often go hand in hand with cooler skin tone. Still confused? If you’re not sure, head to your nearest make up counter and ask them to help (you may be able to bag yourself a few cosmetics freebies in the process!)

So what does it mean?

Once you know your skin tone, here’s how to apply it to your wardrobe:
Women with warm skin tones, tend to look best in yellow based colours – choose earthy hues: mocha, brown, bronze, peach, ivory, deep greens, through to brick reds and warm oranges.
Those with cool skin tones are better suited to blue based colours, so look for jewel tones such as royal blue, emerald green, plumy purples or vibrant pinks.
Of course there is a certain amount of crossover and we’re not suggesting you should avoid a colour you love purely because of your skin tone, but perhaps give slightly different shades a whirl – you might be impressed with the results!

Where to shop

From a fashion perspective At Vida Moda we choose fashion with colours to suit different skin tones so feel free to browse our shop online and if you have a question please email us (address on site) and we’ll be happy to advise on colours that might suit you.

If you are reading this during the summer then it’s likely our summer sale is on. Check it out, we have some beautiful bargains available.

Colour Clashes Colour Wheel

Have Fun with Colour Clashing

Use Colour Clashes to energise your wardrobe

It’s time to be bold, take a step forward and add some colour to your wardrobe. It will add interest and is an instant way to add style to your look. It doesn’t mean you have to be loud (though you can if you wish!) Think of colour as a set of accents you can add to your look to create your personal style.

Is your wardrobe a rainbow, or a field of classic neutrals?

Most of us have at least a few colourful pieces mixed in with the staple blacks and navies and browns, but how many of us are ever brave enough to really mix it up and deliberately clash those brighter hues?
Using colour clashes is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your style, but it can be daunting too, so we’ve put together a few tips to ease you in gently (and avoid the ‘got dressed in the dark’ look!)

Start with small colour clashes

Look at what colours you have to play with – if you love blues, try mixing darker shades with a pop of aqua or turquoise for a fresh new look. If you have lots of greens, try wearing a lime green top with forest green skirt or cardigan. Clashing shades of the same colour is an easy way to experiment with the trend and see what works.

Create a colour clash with accessories

If you’re a slave to the little black dress, try piling on the clashing colours through accessories – a stack of bangles in neon pink and lime green perhaps? Or bright blue earrings with a lavender beaded necklaces. Our red pashmina: Would look amazing worn over a dark green dress or top. Shoes, scarves, bags and even hair accessories are a fun and inexpensive way to bring more colour into your existing looks.

Create Colour Clashes with handbags

An obvious way to add colour to your outfit is with a handbag. (we can ever have too many handbags!) They are particularly effective with darker colours because they are generally not “worn” on the item of clothing and attract attention in their own right. Why not try one of these from Vida Moda to create a colour clash you can be comfortable with?

Pink Satchel from Vida Moda

Pink Satchel Bag

Know which clashes work

Not all colour combinations work, but it’s easy to figure out those that do by using a colour wheel:

Colour Clashes Colour Wheel

Work out your Colour Clashes

Your best bets for a great clashing combo are:

Colours right next to each other (e.g. yellow &yellow-orange or yellow and yellow-green)
Colours straight across from each other (e.g. yellow and violet or blue and orange)
Colours that make a T (e.g. blue, orange, and violet-red or yellow, violet, and red-orange; yellow)
Or if you’re feeling especially brave:
Colours that make an X (e.g. blue, orange, violet-red, and yellow)

So, have another look at your wardrobe, see which colours you have to play with. Don’t be frightened, adding a dash of colour is a subtle way of energising an outfit so get experimenting!

Bond Girl Style – James Bond Skyfall

Bond Girl Style – Skyfall Film Premier

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks, chances are you’ll have heard about the new James Bond movie hitting the big screen.
Skyfall looks like ticking all the usual 007 boxes – drama, action, witty one liners, clever gadgets, dinner suits and of course, devastatingly glamorous women.

Berenice Marlohe at Skyfall PremiereThe premier was of course an equally glamorous event and we were keen to see the array of fabulous frocks flaunted down the red carpet. Unfortunately, we were left a little disappointed. We wanted glitz, glamour and style, and in most cases we got boring, unflattering or starlet Naomie Harris, just odd. Her Marios Schwabb dress was essentially a sequinned bodice under a mass of sheer black netting. It looked unfinished and out of place, certainly not very bond girl. Tamara Ecclestone’s emerald green frock was a great colour, but opting for showing off your cleavage and your legs is never a good idea, it can end up looking a little cheap. Darcy Bussell almost got it right, in an elegant black fishtail frock, but it was topped with a much too big bow which made it look more Halloween than Hollywood for us.

It wasn’t all bad news though, Kelly Brook looked fabulous in a floor length glittering gold frock which flattered her curves beautifully and Berenice Marlohe looked every inch a bond girl in her stunning scarlet gown.

Skyfall Bond Girl Style Winner

Our style winner though, was the always gorgeous Penelope Cruz. Like Kelly, she opted to glitter in gold with a simply beautiful L’Wren Scott gown. She didn’t want to steal the spotlight from husband Javier Bardem (who plays one of the new villains in the new bond movie), and though she kept the look simple with her chic ponytail, subtle makeup and understated Emilio Pucci clutch, it was difficult not to notice how effortlessly elegant she looked on the red carpet. She could be the perfect bond girl. Penelope Cruz at Skyfall Premiere

If you’ve been inspired to add a little shaken not stirred style glamour to your own wardrobe, allow us to be of not so secret service!

Don’t be afraid of colour

Bond Girl Style Roll Neck Top At Vida ModaBond Girls don’t blend in to the background (unless they’re undercover, of course.) So take your lead from Ms Marlohe and dare to stand out with a pop of colour to ensure you don’t go un-noticed. Our purple roll neck is a great place to start, and is full of secret double agent style too. Team it with black skirt or trousers and heels for a classy evening soiree, or with jeans and boots for a daytime rendezvous. Oh, and if you are going undercover then you can team the black version of the roll neck with a black merino wool skirt to devastating effect. Wear either roll neck with a skirt or black jeans.

Know how to Rock a Frock

Anathea Dress By Parakian at Vida ModaGlamorous parties and elegant engagements are all in a day’s work for a budding bond girl, so you’re going to need a good supply of fabulous frocks. Little black dresses are all well and good, but to really stand out, how about this stunning patterned option by French label Parakian? The lacy texture and unusual pattern combine to create a truly stunning dress that will see you through many a dinner party. Good for everyday wear too. Transform this dress using different footerwear, stylish shoes for an evening party or boots as shown for daywear.

Bond Girl Style – Business

Bitte Kai Rand Designer Top and Skirt at Vida Moda

Alternatively, in a business setting you might opt for this striking combination from Danish designer Bitte Kai Rand. A beautiful patterned top and skirt in a wonderful flowing fabric. The skirt is cut in modern style that is glamourous, eyecatching and very chic, perfect bond girl style.

Embrace Your Curves

The most important key to Bond Girl style is to exude confidence and style. Embrace your curves and love your body, whatever shape it is! If you believe you look amazing, it translates to the way you carry yourself, and to the way other people see you. Don’t focus on trying to hide the parts of yourself you don’t like (perhaps we focus too much on this in the UK). Make the most of the parts you do like, and flaunt them to their full potential just like a Bond Girl!

If you’re blessed with voluptuous cleavage, experiment with v-neck and wrap styles to accentuate your ‘assets’. If you have a tiny waist, define it with a belt. If you have great legs, look for shorter length skirts and up the glamour factor with some fishnet tights.

Finishing Touches – Bond Girl Style

James Bond has Q to supply him with gadget or two. Bond Girls make excellent use of accessories and makeup. A flash of red lipstick or well manicured scarlet nails can be the perfect way to finish off your bond girl look, but experiment and see what works for you. Maybe some extra jewellery to add a little sparkle and detail? A killer pair of heels to elongate your legs and add instant glamour? Or perhaps a super chic little clutch bag to stash your lipstick which also doubles as a spy camera. (The 007 stuff might have gone to our heads there!)

Above all else, have fun with it. Bond girl style glamour is frivolous, flirty and fun. Go for all out glamour, or just add a few touches to your everyday look. Either way, you’ll soon be applying for your bond girl style license to thrill.

Is Your Wardrobe Ready for Autumn?

Its time to get your wardrobe sorted for Autumn and winter

This is the first of three Posts where we are going to take a look at some fashion options from the autumn wear collections at Vida Moda for this Autumn/Winter.

Say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn!

The days are shorter, the clocks have just gone back, sunshine and blue skies are getting less frequent, and Summer (such as it was!) is becoming a distant memory.
It’s not all bad news though – saying goodbye to Summer means saying hello to Autumn. From a fashion perspective it is one of my favourite times of year. I love early autumn, where the trees are shedding their leaves and creating a crisp golden carpet underfoot. The winds pick up too and temperatures start to drop.

It’s time to wrap up warm

That means it’s time to start wrapping up warm – lovely layers, cosy cardigans, tights, boots, hats, scarves, and of course bundling up on the sofa with hot chocolate and movies!
The question is though, is your wardrobe Autumn ready? If not, don’t panic, we have a few top tips to help you get set for your most stylish Autumn yet.

Find a Coat you love.

Black Cashmere Coat by Bitte Kai Rand at Vida ModaAs much as a collection of great cardigans or a transitional jacket will get you through the first few weeks of chillier weather, by this time next month, you’ll almost definitely need a coat to wrap up in.
If you don’t already have a beloved winter coat that comes out of hibernation every year, now is the time to get one.

Look at it as an investment, a great coat may seem expensive at the time, but choose well and it will keep you warm and chic for years to come.

A single breasted black cashmere coat just screams timeless chic. It will go with everything and never go out of style. They are a great investment and will serve you well over more than one season.

Bonfire Ruffle Scarf at Vida Moda
You can throw it over work wear, wear with jeans and boots for casual chic, or on top of your best party frock to keep you warm en-route, this classic design never looks out of place. If you want to add a pop of colour, treat yourself to a bright scarf (or two!), like our bonfire ruffle scarf from our range of ruffle scarves – It’s an easy way to change up your look and re-invent your coat whenever you feel like it.

Be different and little more adventurous

If you’re looking to wrap up in something a little more adventurous, how about our Faux Shearling Gilet, marvellously chic but really practical. Easy to wear, lightweight but warm.

Heteroclite Wool Coat At Vida Moda

Looking to make a unique statement? Step back in time and channel some classic french style gloriously reminiscent of the 60′s with our beautifully warm wool coat by Heteroclite?

The combination of blue, charcoal & grey in a cape style make for a stunning design that’s quirkier than plain black, but still neutral enough to wear with everything.

Boiled Wool Jacket at Vida Moda

For days when it’s not quite so savage you could wear this sumptuous red boiled wool jacket by Q’neel, which is light but will still keep you very cosy and you’d look fabulous in it!

Plus Size Fashion Tips – Making The Best Of Late Summer

Late Summer Style

Quick! Summer is nearly finished, but we are still going to get some glorious sunny days before late summer disappears into autumn. So it’s time to grab the dresses, skirts and strappy sandals and get out there while we can!

Late Summer Bargains

Sumptous Linen Summer Dress by Flax at Vida ModaThere are still plenty of late summer bargains to be had. This gorgeous summer dress is still on sale at Vida Moda, reduced to £46 from £92 and it’s perfect for a sunny day. Teamed with some flat sandals and bright nail varnish you’re good to go. It also works just as well dressed up with some nude heels and a gorgeous hat, perfect for a summer wedding or garden party perhaps.

A cream linen dress that looks comfortable as well as stylish is just right for a sunny weekend, ideally that would mean round a pool with a cocktail in hand, but this gorgeous but simple linen dress will be perfect in the garden at home or at a friends house (with a cocktail in hand..!) for a late summer barbecue!

Late Summer Mornings

As much as I love winter dressing, nothing is nicer than getting up in the morning like today and seeing a beautiful fresh and clear blue sky with the sun shinning A signal to grab a dress to throw on. One piece of clothing for the entire outfit, simple and quick so I can get out in the sunshine before it disappears!

If the sun is too hot, or, more likely, it doesn’t stick around all day, then this lightweight white stretch denim jacket is perfect. Made of cotton but with a ‘denim’ style it’s not too heavy or thick and will go with all your late summer outfits and last well into autumn too.<a href="Signature stretch denim jacket at Vida Moda

Why not take advantage of the late summer sale at Vida Moda and get your self a fashion bargain, either a statement piece or something that you can use regularly from your wardrobe.

So, go on, get out there in the sunshine, whether it’s here or on a last minute holiday and make the most of late summer before the nights draw in…

Royal Ascot – Style Tips For Ladies Day At Ascot

Royal Ascot, A Pinnacle Summer Event On the Fashion And Racing Calendar

The racing season is in full swing, the bubbly is on ice and the racing cards are at the ready! But what does it take to be on top form? Are you ready to make a fashion statement at Royal Ascot this year? Here are our top style tips for racing enclosure perfection:

Royal Ascot Dress Code

Check the style rules of the course – Royal Ascot have issued a new dress code this year which is quite strict, you can find it on their website. The main points deal with dress length (1 inch above the knee) dimension of dress straps (nothing less than 1 inch), no bare midriffs. Trouser suits are acceptable if they are full length and of matching material and colour. For Royal Ascot hats should be worn (this rule is relaxed at other Ascot race meetings). There is a further change to the rules for hats at Royal Ascot this year. Headpieces must have a base of at least 4 inches (10cm) to be considered acceptable. Effectively this means that traditional fascinators are officially out of favour in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year.

Thoughts on Style for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot

Dress appropriately for the weather and the time of year – don’t wear a sundress if it’s cold and wet – and be prepared to wear a different outfit at the last minute if the weather is unseasonably wet, cold or hot. Wearing a sundress in the rain or woollies in hot sun is NEVER going to look stylish. The Grand National is proof of the former. The weather so far this summer has been unpredictable to say the least. Hopefully Royal Ascot will see better weather!

Competition to look well turned out is high on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot so some careful planning is required. However it is important to find your own style and learn what suits your size and shape, don’t be tempted to copy what other women wear or be a slave to fashion. In the fashion stakes at Royal Ascot so many ladies overdo it and I think some of the better outfits are those that are simple and stylish and that don’t try too hard!

Our most important recommendation is to buy the size that fits you properly! If you do this you will look slimmer! If you squeeze yourself into something this is a size too small you will actually look larger than you are. Don’t get hung up on a size number. Designers all interpret sizes differently and we take this into account when sizing the collections that we present at Vida Moda.

Going to the races and Royal Ascot in particular is an opportunity to get dressed up for a glorious day out and it is a great opportunity to experiment with colour and flamboyance – but all whilst being demure. Why not browse the collection of summer dresses for Royal Ascot at Vida Moda for Royal Ascot and other race meetings

Practical Tips for Ladies attending Royal Ascot and other summer race meetings

Fake tan. It’s a choice only you can make. If you must indulge, get a spray tan at least 3 days before the big event. Only go two shades darker, anything more and you risk ‘orangerie’. Read my previous post about Fake Tan.

Don’t worry about the price of an outfit – it doesn’t matter if it’s £50 or £500, matters most is that it fits you perfectly and looks great.

Royal Ascot

Go to the races in style

Always wear tights or stockings if you’re donning a tailored outfit – no matter how tanned your legs are, bare pins simply aren’t demure enough.

Keep it simple – classic styles and staple colours such as cream never date.

Accessorise – wear sunglasses on a sunny day or a pair of beautiful gloves and a matching umbrella which co-ordinate with your Royal Ascot outfit in cool conditions.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match – I’ll often wear the jacket of one outfit with the dress from another if they look great together. I don’t believe in wearing something once then getting rid of it.

If you want to score in the style stakes, a hat or headpiece really is a must when it comes to racing etiquette, particularly on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. But please do be sensible, find something that goes with your outfit and don’t forget a gorgeous but simple summer hat could really set off your outfit and make a statement far more than an elaborate headpiece.

Are your nails neat and tidy? Is your hair sleek and styled? If you’re not well groomed it won’t matter how fabulous your outfit is.

Don’t wear heels you can’t walk comfortably in – you won’t look stylish if you’re hobbling around all day or end up barefoot.

Are You Obsessed With Colour Matching?

Colour Matching Your Wardrobe This Summer

Fuchsia Tee Shirt by Siganture at Vida Moda perfect for colour matchingSome people can’t walk out of the door unless they feel co-ordinated. Something has to match something else, the colours must complement and not be an assault on the eyes. But what is the secret to co-ordination through colour matching?

Colour Matching – an obsession for you?

If you’re obsessed with being colour co-ordinated, you know how it feels before you step out the door. You take one look in the mirror to check everything looks right, otherwise, bizarrely, it won’t feel right. Colour matching can help us feel ‘together’ and in control, it puts us at ease and we wear colour to feel comfortable. Black, white and red are a classic blend, spring pastels make the perfect day look, neutrals and cream plays it safe. A lot of larger ladies prefer black because it makes them look slimmer, however at Vida Moda I am always on the look out for collections that make great use of colour and I’d love to see more larger women using colour matching to create a different look for themselves. It is amazing how clever use of colour can projet a totally different and confident image. One of my favourite techniques is to team a bright colour top with white trousers or a white skirt. This simple technique is powerful but subtle.

Colour Matching or Colour Blocking?

Those of us who are a bit braver will go for the opposites on the colour wheel, i.e. purple and yellow are loud partners in crime but they work. This is colour blocking which is very much in vogue this season, you can stick with complementary colours or you can “push” it a little! Perhaps some of the more extreme variations look better on the catwalk but you can still make some great colour statements yourself.

Colour Matching – This Seasons Colours at Vida Moda

Some strong colours have continued to from the Winter season, Strong purplesa nd mustard have been joined for summer by vibrant oranges, dark blue, and kiwi green all colours which are good for colour matching or which look superb with white.

Flax ElderBerry Tank Top at Vida Moda perfect for colour matching

Colour Matching with Accessories

What if it goes further than matching jackets with trousers or shoes? Do some of us find ourselves crafting a look to the minutest detail, earrings, nails, eye shadow or lips? It certainly seems like a lot of effort but when the ensemble looks 100% bang on, we never forget it. So much so, that getting the right colour match for you can be a bit addictive but also easy to differentiate between times when you want to relax, veg out and be lazy in a striped top matched with floral trousers. You can, if you wish do a little more colour matching and accessorise with shoes and handbags!

In Summary

All of it says a lot about our personality. Those who don’t feel the need to colour co-ordinate are possibly more relaxed and spontaneous people. For a lucky few, mismatching actually works but it mostly down to the actual garment and how it fits, rather than the choice of patterns and colours. It’s all too easy to play it safe but choosing styles we wouldn’t normally go for or blend can rejuvenate our brains and personality. It’s a statement of rebellion or change.

Whatever we do with colour, it’s important to have fun. So the next time you find yourself matching a pair of earrings to a top, think to yourself – is it really that important?

Start splashing some personality into your wardrobe with Vida Moda’s new summer collections which are all about colour this year. Speaking of colour why not read our tips about fake tan!
