What is a fashionable body shape and does it matter?

What is a fashionable body shape? This is an interesting question and has different answers in different contexts. A friend recently shared two photographs with us that illustrated this concept perfectly. The question is what makes one body shape more acceptable than another? The ultimate answer is none.

Changing Body Shape

Body shape has been and continues to be “valued” and viewed differently over time and it is also viewed differently in different cultures. Body shape changes through the decades and fashion trends emphasise different parts of the body. Think about Victorian body shapes and fashion styles; think about the shape of women in the 1950’s. Think about the shape of women today. In western society this is accentuated by coverage in the media and by people in positions of media influence promoting one body shape as being more attractive and acceptable than another.

No guesses as to what I’m referring to here. We are in a time where larger people are not viewed as favourably as thinner people. The fashion industry plays and has played an aggressive role in the promotion of “thin” women – anyone remember the “drug addict” look of very thin models made up with shadows under their eyes? Was this really considered to be attractive or was it just media hype?

Health And Body Shape

The government and health bodies also play a part in shaping peoples perceptions about body shape by claiming overweight people are more likely to suffer from health problems. In reality any extremes in body shape can cause health issues. So an emaciated person is just as likely to face serious health issues as a morbidly obese person. Larger people are criticised for their size to a degree that women who aren’t that overweight feel tremendous pressure to conform to an ideological shape that is more difficult to adhere to the older we get.

Consider the following two images (mentioned above) both are marketing images for very different brands. Both are celebrating women’s beauty but they sending very different messages. Someone even suggested that one of the photographs has been adjusted to change the shape of the models. I don’t know whether that is the case or not, you can judge for yourselves. What is clear though is that taste and style is subjective and people will make harsh judgements about body shape which to my way of thinking is a shame.

Body Shape Image for discussion about fashionable body shapes

Normal Body Shape?

Potentially the whole concept of what is a normal body shape is disappearing. The fashion industry doesn’t appear to recognise this. As a whole they largely still aim for a market aged between 16 and 34 and who are a “standard” shape and size. I’ve been to many trade shows where the manufacturers just can’t fathom women being over a size 16.

The reality of the matter is that body shapes and sizes are changing and probably not in a manner that will suit the fashion industry. So far the industry is struggling to recognise this and make clothes that are suitable for different body shapes and sizes. I’ll discuss this further in a follow up post.

Royal Ascot – Style Tips For Ladies Day At Ascot

Royal Ascot, A Pinnacle Summer Event On the Fashion And Racing Calendar

The racing season is in full swing, the bubbly is on ice and the racing cards are at the ready! But what does it take to be on top form? Are you ready to make a fashion statement at Royal Ascot this year? Here are our top style tips for racing enclosure perfection:

Royal Ascot Dress Code

Check the style rules of the course – Royal Ascot have issued a new dress code this year which is quite strict, you can find it on their website. The main points deal with dress length (1 inch above the knee) dimension of dress straps (nothing less than 1 inch), no bare midriffs. Trouser suits are acceptable if they are full length and of matching material and colour. For Royal Ascot hats should be worn (this rule is relaxed at other Ascot race meetings). There is a further change to the rules for hats at Royal Ascot this year. Headpieces must have a base of at least 4 inches (10cm) to be considered acceptable. Effectively this means that traditional fascinators are officially out of favour in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot this year.

Thoughts on Style for Ladies Day at Royal Ascot

Dress appropriately for the weather and the time of year – don’t wear a sundress if it’s cold and wet – and be prepared to wear a different outfit at the last minute if the weather is unseasonably wet, cold or hot. Wearing a sundress in the rain or woollies in hot sun is NEVER going to look stylish. The Grand National is proof of the former. The weather so far this summer has been unpredictable to say the least. Hopefully Royal Ascot will see better weather!

Competition to look well turned out is high on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot so some careful planning is required. However it is important to find your own style and learn what suits your size and shape, don’t be tempted to copy what other women wear or be a slave to fashion. In the fashion stakes at Royal Ascot so many ladies overdo it and I think some of the better outfits are those that are simple and stylish and that don’t try too hard!

Our most important recommendation is to buy the size that fits you properly! If you do this you will look slimmer! If you squeeze yourself into something this is a size too small you will actually look larger than you are. Don’t get hung up on a size number. Designers all interpret sizes differently and we take this into account when sizing the collections that we present at Vida Moda.

Going to the races and Royal Ascot in particular is an opportunity to get dressed up for a glorious day out and it is a great opportunity to experiment with colour and flamboyance – but all whilst being demure. Practical Tips for Ladies attending Royal Ascot and other summer race meetings

Fake tan. It’s a choice only you can make. If you must indulge, get a spray tan at least 3 days before the big event. Only go two shades darker, anything more and you risk ‘orangerie’. Read my previous post about Fake Tan.

Don’t worry about the price of an outfit – it doesn’t matter if it’s £50 or £500, matters most is that it fits you perfectly and looks great.

Royal Ascot

Go to the races in style

Always wear tights or stockings if you’re donning a tailored outfit – no matter how tanned your legs are, bare pins simply aren’t demure enough.

Keep it simple – classic styles and staple colours such as cream never date.

Accessorise – wear sunglasses on a sunny day or a pair of beautiful gloves and a matching umbrella which co-ordinate with your Royal Ascot outfit in cool conditions.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match – I’ll often wear the jacket of one outfit with the dress from another if they look great together. I don’t believe in wearing something once then getting rid of it.

If you want to score in the style stakes, a hat or headpiece really is a must when it comes to racing etiquette, particularly on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot. But please do be sensible, find something that goes with your outfit and don’t forget a gorgeous but simple summer hat could really set off your outfit and make a statement far more than an elaborate headpiece.

Are your nails neat and tidy? Is your hair sleek and styled? If you’re not well groomed it won’t matter how fabulous your outfit is.

Don’t wear heels you can’t walk comfortably in – you won’t look stylish if you’re hobbling around all day or end up barefoot.

Are You Obsessed With Colour Matching?

Colour Matching Your Wardrobe This Summer

Fuchsia Tee Shirt by Siganture at Vida Moda perfect for colour matchingSome people can’t walk out of the door unless they feel co-ordinated. Something has to match something else, the colours must complement and not be an assault on the eyes. But what is the secret to co-ordination through colour matching?

Colour Matching – an obsession for you?

If you’re obsessed with being colour co-ordinated, you know how it feels before you step out the door. You take one look in the mirror to check everything looks right, otherwise, bizarrely, it won’t feel right. Colour matching can help us feel ‘together’ and in control, it puts us at ease and we wear colour to feel comfortable. Black, white and red are a classic blend, spring pastels make the perfect day look, neutrals and cream plays it safe. A lot of larger ladies prefer black because it makes them look slimmer, however at Vida Moda I am always on the look out for collections that make great use of colour and I’d love to see more larger women using colour matching to create a different look for themselves. It is amazing how clever use of colour can projet a totally different and confident image. One of my favourite techniques is to team a bright colour top with white trousers or a white skirt. This simple technique is powerful but subtle.

Colour Matching or Colour Blocking?

Those of us who are a bit braver will go for the opposites on the colour wheel, i.e. purple and yellow are loud partners in crime but they work. This is colour blocking which is very much in vogue this season, you can stick with complementary colours or you can “push” it a little! Perhaps some of the more extreme variations look better on the catwalk but you can still make some great colour statements yourself.

Colour Matching – This Seasons Colours at Vida Moda

Some strong colours have continued to from the Winter season, Strong purplesa nd mustard have been joined for summer by vibrant oranges, dark blue, and kiwi green all colours which are good for colour matching or which look superb with white.

Flax ElderBerry Tank Top at Vida Moda perfect for colour matching

Colour Matching with Accessories

What if it goes further than matching jackets with trousers or shoes? Do some of us find ourselves crafting a look to the minutest detail, earrings, nails, eye shadow or lips? It certainly seems like a lot of effort but when the ensemble looks 100% bang on, we never forget it. So much so, that getting the right colour match for you can be a bit addictive but also easy to differentiate between times when you want to relax, veg out and be lazy in a striped top matched with floral trousers. You can, if you wish do a little more colour matching and accessorise with shoes and handbags!

In Summary

All of it says a lot about our personality. Those who don’t feel the need to colour co-ordinate are possibly more relaxed and spontaneous people. For a lucky few, mismatching actually works but it mostly down to the actual garment and how it fits, rather than the choice of patterns and colours. It’s all too easy to play it safe but choosing styles we wouldn’t normally go for or blend can rejuvenate our brains and personality. It’s a statement of rebellion or change.

Whatever we do with colour, it’s important to have fun. So the next time you find yourself matching a pair of earrings to a top, think to yourself – is it really that important?

Start splashing some personality into your wardrobe with Vida Moda’s new summer collections which are all about colour this year. Speaking of colour why not read our tips about fake tan!

Fake tan: is it really worth it?

fake tanFake tan is hugely popular as tanning in the sun is dangerous and out of style, this much we know. However, we can’t deny a warm, bronze glow on the skin can be flattering and healthy looking. With summer just around the corner and we shed layers, we also show more skin. So, do we fake it or not?

If you saw the Apprentice last week you’ll have seen the popularity of fake tan, even when sold off a table in the middle of a shopping centre with no real credibility behind it! So what is it about fake tan that attracts us? Quite simply it is the desire to be perceived as being beautiful and how better to the that than with a bottle of fake tan if you are not in a position to take a sun kissed holiday for 2 months in the sun. There are pitfalls though so do read on!

Fake Tan facts

According to St. Tropez, one of the UK’s leading fake tan brands, 41% of the nation’s women use fake tan. It’s become almost uniform for celebrities to be bronzed to some degree. Sporting a healthy glow is thought to show affluence but for many of us, going a shade or two darker hides a multitude of skin impurities. But you can’t flick through a gossip magazine during summer without seeing pictures of some fake tan embarrassment. Streaks, dayglo orange, blotches and visible tan lines, despite the best efforts of application and how much you may have paid, you risk to look tacky and artificial. With the Katie Prices of this world, we almost come to expect it but even A-listers such as Kiera Knightly are not immune to fake tan disasters. Poor Christina Aguilera was torn to shreds by the media when a mysterious trail of dark liquid trickled down her leg whilst performing at Etta James’ funeral earlier this year.

Fake Tan Spray Booths

Despite the debate over whether bronzing out of a bottle looks classy or not, the popularity of fake tanning is not waning. Many of our beauty therapists are offering it as standard plus spray tan booths are germinating the local high street and the neighbourhood parade of shops. Modern devices offer a smooth, airbrush like quality, so you wonder how it can ever go wrong. Even with all this technology, the temptation of oneupmanship is too strong, even Hollywood stars measuring too strong on the orange-o-metre.

It is completely possible to simply introduce a better skin routine, drinking more water, eating a balanced diet and strategically using a quality bronzing powder to create the same sort of glow. Also consider that some colour garments will make you look more pale, so blend your outfit to match your complexion.

DIY Fake Tan

If you are going the DIY bottle tan route, be warned. It takes a lot of practice to get it right plus you absolutely must follow some steps for a smooth finish, exfoliating, moisturising and having the lemon juice to hand. Happily with the internet, there’s a good stack of posts with excellent tips for application!

Put a Spring In Your Step and Wardrobe

Spring Fashion

Spring is a time for renewal, refocus and replenish. It’s also perfect for tidying up your wardrobe, organising your clothes for warmer weather and making a list of items you need to buy.

Spring Fashion White Linen Jacket at Vida ModaAs we head towards brighter and warmer weather (fingers crossed) in the UK, we lean towards livening up our clothing choices with colours and lighter fabrics from spring fashion collections. Nothing makes us feel better than we first shed some layers and wear jackets instead of coats. Possibly because they are lighter in weight and less cumbersome. But also because the colours symbolise brighter days, lighter nights and we get to have fun experimenting with them.

Spring Fashion Trends

So what’s on trend in Spring Fashion 2012? Lots of colour! Whether it’s blocks of deep hues or digital floral prints, it seems like the theme for many designers is having fun with every shape and shade. Which is good news when it comes to carving out your own spring fashion style. In terms of accessories, shoe boots are still big this year, the bigger the heels the better. Which is perfect as they suit all heights and shapes teamed up with trousers or long skirts (also still on trend). In terms of bags, it’s back to the 70′s a little with woven bags with macrame style straps.

Spring Fashion Shopping List

Before making a clothes shopping list, survey your existing Spring/ Summer garments. Keep those which are in good condition, you know fit well and will feel comfortable wearing for another season. Hanging onto skirts, trousers and dresses which fall into these categories is optimal. You can then treat yourself with new jackets or tops and accessories to go with them. It’s important to be honest with yourself about any colours or patterns you’re not comfortable with before buying. Often we fall for an item that is simply lush looking but don’t think about how it will look on.

Spring Fashion 2012 Sales

Once you have it clear in your mind how many of each garment you need, make your list and shop away. There plenty of sale items available. In a few easy steps or clicks you could get yourself a whole new wardrobe with a few additional pieces from spring fashion collections. Vida Moda currently has a spring fashion sale, a few select items at good prices that will help liven up your wardrobe as described above. Check out some of our other fashion tips on this blog!
