Summer Dresses – a further option – Strawberries and Cream!

Its the second week of Wimbledon and things are hotting up, literally! We are in the midst of a mini heatwave and as I write this we are due a storm that might take the humidity away! On court it has been a hot day too, spare a thought for the poor players charging around in this heat. Ladies be well aware that Rafa may well require numerous shirt changes especially if he has another tough match in the heat like the one today. Andy Murray won too. In fact the top of the men’s draw is still intact but the ladies draw threw up two very surprising exits today. The Williams sisters both lost and while neither were seeded in the top 4 you’d always expect them to feature given their impressive past performances in the tournament. The Ladies singles is anyone’s title this year, could this be the year that Maria Sharapova comes back and wins a second title? One or other of the Williams sisters has won The Ladies Singles Title at Wimbledon 9 times in the last 11 years, Maria Sharapova and Amélie Mauresmo were the winners in the remaining two years. Only one of the last 11 finals did not feature a Williams sister so 2011 is definite break with recent tradition for the ladies.

So what of one of Wimbledon’s other traditions? Well of course you need some contrasting colour to really bring out the greenness of Wimbledon and what better colour than Red. Strawberries and Cream, the sweet side of Wimbledon, perfect for a sunny day and as English a tradition as the tournament itself. To celebrate the tradition of Strawberries and Cream at Wimbledon we are have a beautiful Red and White Plus Size Summer Dress for you. We also have some Plus Size White Linen Trousers that will complement it and leave you feeling cool and comfortable on court!

Carole Vorderman Rear of the Year 2011

Does my bum look big in this? – and isn’t it ok if it does?

The title of this post is perhaps a common question, but we do wonder if it is ever uttered out loud! We are sure many of you mentally ask this question, but perhaps only quietly to yourselves. Why? Are you frightened of the answer? or perhaps you don’t wish to be ridiculed by your spouse, family or friends. Well fear not, it is perfectly OK to have a “big bum”, indeed fashion history shows that at points in time a large rear was de rigeur. In Victorian times (1870′s and 1880′s) we had the “bustle” a built up area of cloth at the rear of a dress to accentuate a ladies rear! This combined with rib crushing corsets and a resulting exaggerated bust meant that Victorian Woman while being prim and elegant was also encouraged to massively exaggerate her body shape.

Carole Vorderman Rear of the Year 2011

Carole Vorderman Rear of the Year 2011

In the modern era we have “Rear of the Year”, an award of some 30 years standing that is typically awarded to celebrities who then get to pose themselves and their award winning rear in the sponsors garments. It is awarded to both a male and female each year. The Rear of the Year website makes a very valid point around the way the fashion industry influences the perception of how women perceive the size of their bums and how acceptable that size is. It goes in phases, so one year we will be in “athletic” mode where bums are trim and toned and maybe even masculine, then there is a reaction where the trend moves back towards the more voluptuous derrière.

This explains why Fiona Bruce won the award in 2010 (trim and athletic) and Carole Vorderman (more rounded) won it in 2011, beating Pippa Middleton into second place – well done Carole! The more rounded and full derrière is in fashion at the moment as it was a few years ago when Jennifier Lopez seemed to catch the “rear” limelight. Clover Stroud covered this subject in her well written article “Better from Behind” in the Sunday Times Style Magazine last weekend. Her article was humorous and Clover rightly encourages women to embrace their generous bums and to be proud of them.

Pippa Middleton came in for some commentary at the Royal wedding about how she looked in her dress (very pretty) but dare we say a little ordinary from behind? We can but wonder what the reaction from the commentators would have been if it was Kim Kardashian following Kate Middleton up the steps. We fear that some of the older male commentators would have had to reach for emergency BBC or ITV oxygen supplies while younger colleagues may have been verbally flabbergasted. These days we are lucky that cameras for this type of event are on good solid stands or the picture may have wavered somewhat too!

So on a more serious note ladies, while you may wish to shed an inch or two, be proud of your plus size belle derrière, embrace it, have fun with it, look after it and if you’ve got it flaunt it!

Of course we’d love to hear your opinions, do you have a big bum, are you proud of it? or do you wish it was somewhere else? Can you help us get to the bottom of the issue? :-) Add a comment, share the article and let’s hear other peoples views!

Wimbledon starts next week so what are you going to wear if you are going?

One of things we love about Wimbledon is the fact that the players have to wear White, it’s a competition rule and advertising on the court is also kept to a minimum. White looks so good against the green background of the grass and the court surroundings.

Will the TV cameras catch sight of you and be forced to linger because you look stunning? We hope so! At Vida Moda We’ve got a few options that will help look really good at Wimbledon this year. The Wimbledon Championship – A British Tradition

The All England Lawn Tennis Club

Image ©Tom Vander Well 2009

One of the milestones of British summer is approaching fast. Yes it’s time for The Wimbledon Championship, held at the All England Club, where we see the game of tennis presented in a quintessentially British fashion. This is the time of year when millions of British people tune in to see a player from the British Isles lift either of the singles trophies at Wimbledon. We think The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are the jewel in the crown of World tennis. Of the four Grand Slam Titles it is perhaps the one that all players wish to win the most. The Lawn Tennis Association make a valiant effort every year to make sure the championship is beautifully presented and well run, not withstanding the weather!. Henman Hill will be awash with hopeful fans all watching the big screen with a fervent desire to catch a glimpse of a potential British Champion. Will we be lucky this year?

So ladies the most important question is are you lucky enough to be going? Do you have a ticket or are you having to join the queue for tickets on the day? Over the course of this week we’ll be celebrating Wimbledon with some blog posts and special offers highlighting our choice of what to wear from Vida Moda if you are going to Wimbledon this year. We’ve got some very nice summer clothes to help you look fabulous at Wimbledon!

Sunday Times – A Life in the Day – Nancy Dell’Olio

The Sunday Times Magazine closes with with it’s regular “A Life in the Day” piece. I read this every week. The magazine covers people from every section of life that you can imagine and at one point published a collection of these “Life Snapshots” as a book.

Today the featured individual is Nancy Dell’Olio whose is perhaps best remembered for being involved with Seven Goran Eriksson. I felt sorry for her at the time. Today unfortunately Nancy does not come across at all well in the article which is titled “I’m special, so special…”. I honestly don’t know what to believe, did she agree to this interpretation of the interview carried out by Caroline Scott? if so, and if the interpretation is true then she is probably best avoided at all costs. If true I can almost imagine the interviewers Dictaphone grinding to a halt in horror. Perhaps I expected to read something about what she does for others, what causes she is passionate about, she is a minor celebrity after all and I would have expected Nancy to have a cause or tow to trumpet about.

I was wrong, the article was totally about her view of herself and her appearance. I was totally flabbergasted by Miss Dell’Olio’s opinion of herself. I really hope it is not accurate. Reading this after the article about Big Game Hunting made me feel sad at the recklessness of man and angry at the shallowness of the world we live in. Or maybe I’ve been duped by a blatant play for some publicity. Who knows!
